The 3000GT VR4 was more advanced than Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and even Porsches of the 1990s—but despite its innovation, it still failed.

During the golden era of Japanese performance cars, the Supra was a powerhouse, the GT-R dominated racing, and Mazda had its RX-7 dialed in. Yet, every brand had their eyes on Mitsubishi's ambitious creation: the 3000GT VR4 (or GTO).

Equipped with a 3.0L twin-turbo engine, twin intercoolers, and AWD, the VR4 packed every gadget imaginable. Parallel all-wheel steering, electronically controlled suspension, cockpit-adjustable active exhaust, and active aero front and rear—it had it all. It was like unlocking every DLC in a game at once.

But for all its wild tech, Mitsubishi couldn’t sustain it. Active aero? Discontinued. All-wheel steering? Removed. Exhaust options? Simplified. Why?

Despite its potential, the VR4 was built heavy—too heavy to keep up with lighter competitors like the Supra and Skyline. Those cars, though also hefty, proved more durable under pressure. Meanwhile, the VR4’s performance struggled to match its innovation.

While the 3000GT VR4 is one of the most striking Japanese sports cars ever, buying one today is risky if you don’t know what you’re getting into.
